On November 15, 2024, the Jean Monnet EU Centre of Excellence (JMCE) at Korea University successfully held the 2024 Journalist Roundtable in Seoul under the theme “Enhancing Sustainable Development Partnership between the EU and Korea.”

The 2023 Journalist Roundtable had been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Accordingly, the 2024 roundtable was organized by inviting the journalists who had originally been scheduled to participate in 2023, allowing for the continuation of meaningful dialogue and exchange.

The roundtable brought together 10 distinguished journalists and professors, along with 20 graduate students from the Graduate School of International Studies. Discussions focused on strengthening EU–Korea cooperation in sustainable development, including green technology, renewable energy, smart cities, carbon pricing, and regulatory alignment.

In addition to sustainability cooperation, participants also addressed the U.S. presidential election as the most significant global political issue, examining its potential implications for EU–Korea relations, climate policy, and the broader international order. The discussion highlighted how changes in U.S. leadership could influence transatlantic cooperation, global trade, and climate governance frameworks.

Speakers emphasized:

  • The importance of public–private partnerships in advancing sustainability initiatives

  • The role of media in shaping public understanding of climate change and EU–Korea cooperation

  • The need to reduce regulatory disparities, particularly in emissions trading and carbon standards

  • The importance of youth engagement and SME participation in sustainable development efforts

The roundtable concluded with a shared commitment to continued dialogue and practical collaboration. Participants proposed exploring the establishment of a joint EU–Korea media consortium and organizing follow-up events focused on sector-specific sustainability issues.

The 2024 Journalist Roundtable reaffirmed JMCE’s dedication to fostering informed discussion, academic exchange, and policy-oriented dialogue on key global challenges affecting the European Union, Korea, and beyond.
