In Week 4, EU Society member Ly Phung Thanh delivered a presentation titled “Human Security: Human Trafficking in the EU in the 21st Century.” The presentation focused on one of the most pressing human security challenges facing Europe today and explored the social, political, and humanitarian dimensions of human trafficking within the European Union.
The session examined the different forms of human trafficking, including forced labor, sexual exploitation, and migrant trafficking, while also discussing the factors that make individuals vulnerable to exploitation. Attention was given to how globalization, migration flows, organized crime, and economic inequality contribute to the persistence of trafficking networks across Europe.
The presentation also highlighted the European Union’s efforts to combat human trafficking through legislation, cross-border cooperation, victim protection policies, and partnerships with international organizations. Members engaged in thoughtful discussion regarding the effectiveness of current EU policies and the challenges that remain in addressing human security issues in the modern era.
Overall, the presentation encouraged members to think critically about the human impact of security policies and broadened the society’s discussion beyond traditional military and geopolitical perspectives on European security.
