In Week 6, EU Society member Silke Helmich delivered a presentation titled “Energy as a Weapon.” The session examined how energy resources and supply chains have become increasingly connected to geopolitical strategy and security within Europe.

The presentation focused particularly on the European Union’s historical reliance on Russian energy supplies, especially natural gas, and how this dependence created vulnerabilities during periods of political tension and conflict. Silke discussed how the war in Ukraine and deteriorating EU–Russia relations exposed the risks of depending heavily on a single external supplier for critical energy needs.

The session explored how disruptions in energy supply affected European economies, energy prices, industries, and households across the continent. Members also discussed the political implications of energy dependency, including how energy can be used as a tool of influence and pressure in international relations.

In addition, the presentation highlighted the European Union’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy sources, strengthen energy security, and accelerate investment in renewable energy and sustainable alternatives. The discussion encouraged members to consider the close relationship between energy policy, economic stability, and European security in today’s geopolitical environment.

Overall, the presentation provided valuable insight into one of the European Union’s most significant contemporary security and policy challenges.
